See how our Intermediate/Advanced Drawing class collaborated with dance 👀

Professor Chelsea Hilding from the Department of Dance recently collaborated for the “movement” unit in Professor Lydia Smith’s Intermediate/Advanced Drawing class. They received Wake the Arts Funding to sponsor this collaboration!

Professor Hilding invited two dance students, Kenley McClure and Whitney Donohue, to dance during one of the class sessions, while drawing students captured their improvisational movements through gesture drawings and experiments with mark-making.

Professor Hilding also shared a short presentation on Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), a framework used in dance to observe, describe, and interpret human movement. Students then used the drawings created during this session to inform the direction of their projects for this unit. Professor Hilding and Kenley later joined them for the critique of the final drawings of this unit.

Endia Beal, our studio art faculty member who teaches photography, will be part of Soul Spark 2025 this Thursday!

Soul Spark 2025 is an evening of storytelling, spirit, and inspiration that kicks off Wake Forest’s Homecoming Weekend. Check out these fun behind-the-scenes moments from The Darkness exhibition in Hanes Gallery!

The exhibition features recent works by Wake Forest University studio art faculty Rudy Shepherd and Molly Kaderka, presenting two distinct yet resonant approaches to making sense of the world around us.

Kaderka’s large-scale paintings and installations reimagine the language of landscape by collapsing ground and sky into circular compositions, inviting viewers to reflect on awe, mystery, and our place within vast natural systems. Shepherd’s fourty-six watercolor portraits depicted famous figures – world leaders, artists, perpetrators, and victims – presented alongside his sculptures (Black Rock Negative Energy Absorbers) and ceramic works (Healing Devices). Together, their works explore darkness and invite viewers into profound explorations of the world around us, offering moments of reflection, connection, and transformation.

Caught you in 4K! 📸 Come take a look into our History of Black Photography class!

Professor Endia Beal’s class (@endiabeal) visited the Visual Resources Center to explore historic photography methods and materials, including tintypes, vintage prints, and early photographic equipment. Each student selected a process or mechanism to study closely and presented their findings to the class.

Celebrate the ways photography’s earliest forms continue to preserve memory and meaning.

Paint, print, and play with our Intro to Printmaking class!

Over the past weeks, our printmaking class made some interesting irregular-shaped pattern prints using linoleum. Professor David Faber also taught the students how to use printmaking tools, such as brayer, blotters, and miracle gel. Take a look at the students’ impressive works and celebrate their creativity with us!

Enjoy light and shadow with our Intermediate and Advanced Drawing class!

On Monday, Professor Lydia Smith and her students created shadow drawings from found materials such as a paper box, aluminum foil, and cotton swab. They were inspired by artists including William Kentridge and Anila Quayyum Agha, who use light and shadow to create projected drawings in space.

David Lubin, our former professor at Department of Art who has just retired this summer, published his new book “Ready for My Close-Up” in August!

“Ready for My Close-Up” is about “Sunset Boulevard”, a classic 1950 film noir about a faded silent-movie star who becomes obsessed with a young screenwriter.

Professor Rubin was featured on CBS Saturday Morning and on NPR’s All Things Considered. Here’s the link of the two appearances:

Join us for the opening of Stamp Works on Friday, September 12, from 5 to 7 pm at the Brockway Recruiting Center in Farrell Hall.

Featuring work from Art 110A, this exhibition brings together student printmaking projects taught by Adjunct Assistant Professor Bryan Ellis in Spring 2025, made possible through the support of a WakerSpace Faculty Fellow Grant.

Stamp Works will remain on view through December 5, 2025.

Take a peek into the second week of Studio Arts... 👀

In Intro to Drawing with Professor Smith, students took their classroom outside into the courtyard and got creative with their own materials. They burned sticks from around campus into charcoal, made ink from black walnuts, and built drawing tools from found objects.

In Intermediate and Advanced Drawing, students explored collaborative exercises, including a contraption that let multiple artists draw at the same time with a single pen.

Professor Joel Tauber’s new movie, Razor-Sharp: When Arguing Is A Good Thing, premiered last week at the Pune Short Film Festival in Pune, India. The film asks how we can engage in real conversation in our time of deep division. Then it focuses on the ancient Jewish practice of chavruta (heated discourse and constructive debate) as a mechanism of getting there.
